Free Commission Capitalization Calculator ASC 340-40

Paste or upload your deals and get your month-end close for deferred commissions: the rollforward, a deal-level amortization schedule, the current/noncurrent split and ready-to-post journal entries. It works for ASC 340-40 and the matching IFRS 15 rule for costs to obtain a contract. It's free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser.

Used for deals whose renewals don't earn a commensurate commission, unless the row sets benefit_months.
Expense deals with an amortization period of 12 months or less (ASC 340-40-25-4).

We're considering a paid version that imports your deals from your CRM or Stripe each month and gives you the journal entries and the deferred commissions rollforward, ready to post. It doesn't exist yet. Reserving is free, with no card and no charge, and this calculator stays free either way. If enough teams reserve, we'll build it and email you once at launch.

CSV columns

ColumnWhat to put
deal_idAny unique ID
booking_dateYYYY-MM-DD, the date the commission was earned. The booking month counts as amortization month 1.
contract_term_monthsInitial contract term, for example 12, 24 or 36
rep_commission, manager_override, employer_taxDollar amounts of the incremental costs for the deal. Use 0 for any you don't have.
renewal_commensurateyes if renewals earn a commission commensurate with the initial one (the period is then the contract term), otherwise no. Blank means yes for terms of 12 months or less. Enter no for 12-month contracts whose renewals pay no commission or a smaller one (for example 10% on the first year and nothing on renewal). Those costs are amortized over the expected customer life, and the practical expedient can't be used.
benefit_monthsOptional. The amortization period for this deal when renewal_commensurate is no. Blank uses the expected customer life above.

How the calculation works

Not covered yet: clawbacks, impairment write-offs on churned customers (ASC 340-40-35-3), and commissions paid over time. Handle those as manual entries.

FAQ

Which sales commissions must be capitalized?

Costs you would not have incurred if the contract weren't signed, and that you expect to recover. That usually means rep commissions, manager overrides paid only on signed deals, and the employer payroll taxes on them. Base salary, team bonuses and discretionary pay are generally expensed.

How long should we amortize?

If renewals earn a commensurate commission, the contract term is usually the period. If they don't, the period covers expected renewals, often estimated from customer churn (for example, 20% annual churn implies about a 5-year life). Use the sensitivity table to see how much the choice moves the numbers.

Can we expense commissions on 12-month contracts?

Only when renewals earn a commensurate commission, so the amortization period really is one year or less (ASC 340-40-25-4, IFRS 15.94). If your plan pays, say, 10% on the first year and nothing on renewal, the period includes expected renewals, so capitalize and amortize over the customer life (ASC 340-40-35-1, IFRS 15.99). Enter no in renewal_commensurate for those deals. A blank is treated as yes for terms of 12 months or less, and the tool flags how many deals it assumed.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The file is read and computed in your browser. We only record an anonymous count that a calculation ran.
